He married (1) REBECCA ELMIRA JOINER Abt. 1835 in Washington Co, GA, daughter of MALACHI JOINER and RACHEL GARDNER. She was born Mar 25, 1815 in Washington Co., GA, and died Mar 5, 1864 in Washington Co., GA. He married (2) SOPHIE WHIDDEN Dec 30, 1864 in Washington Co, GA. Notes for JOSEPH DUTY SMITH:

Joseph D. Smith was born in 1813 in Washington Co, Ga. He married Rebecca Elmira Joiner in 1835. Elmira died in 1864 and he married Sophie (Whidden) Smith, widow of Daniel C. Smith. To the marriage she brought her two daughters, Mary E. and Emma T. Sophie and Joseph had one son, Ednar Columbus born in 1866.

Some believe that Joseph married a third time to Mary Vann but no record has been found. In 1880 he was still living with Sohpie and since he is 67 yrs. old in 1880 and he died in 1887 I think it is unlikely that he married again.

Notes for REBECCA ELMIRA JOINER:

Name is Virginia on the 1870 census.
1900 Laurens Co, GA. Calvin C. 32, Mattie 40, Children: Lula 19, Dessie 12, Imogene 10, Mercie 7. Mattie and Calvin have been married 12 years. She has had 5 children with 4 living. Lula should be Lula Starling, daughter of Martha and Simon Starling. Martha Starling should be widow in 1880 - have not been able to find her.

Notes for CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS SMITH:

"Colby Smith and His Descendants" has his name as Columbus in one place and Christopher Columbus in another place. On the 1900 census he is Calvin C. and on the 1870 census with David and Cynthia E. Smith he is Christopher C. On the1880 census with David and Jane Smith he is Charles. There's definately a problem with this family.

Columbus' children originally from "Colby Smith and His Descendants". The 1900 census record shows these children to be the children of Calvin C. and Mattie.

10. THOMAS IVY5 SMITH (JOSEPH DUTY4, MICAJAH3, COLBY2, THOMAS1) was born Apr 20, 1860 in Washington Co., GA, and died Nov 30, 1930 in Emanuel Co., GA. He married (1) CENIANN PERMELIA BOATWRIGHT Jul 25, 1880 in Emanuel Co, GA, daughter of JAMES BOATWRIGHT and RACHEL JOINER. She was born May 13, 1856 in Laurens Co, GA, and died Oct 17, 1917 in Emanuel Co., GA. He married (2) GRIFFIN Unknown in Adrian, Ga (1919). She was born Unknown, and died Unknown.

Notes for THOMAS IVY SMITH:

Thomas Ivey Smith was born April 20, 1860 in Washington County, Georgia. He lived there until after his marriage to Ceniann Permelia Boatwright and then moved to Emanuel County. He farmed in Emanuel County until his death. He is listed on the 1930 Census living with his son, Devoe, in Highlands County Florida. He then returned to Emanuel County, Ga. where he died in November of that year.

His wife died in 1917 and it is believed that he married again in 1919 but no record has been found. He did not have a wife on the 1920 census record.

C.P. and T.I. Smith bought 60 acres (more or less) from U.m. and E.L. Durden for $1000.00 Oct. 26, 1905. This land is adjoining land owned by C.P.Smith and Jane Barwick.

Notes for CENIANN PERMELIA BOATWRIGHT:

Ceniann Permelia Boatwright was born in Washington county, Ga. By the 1860 Census the family had moved to Laurens county where she is listed as 4 yrs. old. On the 1870 census she is listed as Susan A., 14 yrs. old. The age is right and there was no Susan listed on 1860 census. The census taker probably heard Susan Ann instead of Ceniann.

Her father died in the Civil War and her mother died in 1880. In 1880 she married Thomas Ivey Smith. On the 1900 and 1910 census she is listed with her husband and children in Emanuel county, Ga., Adrian.

Ceniann bought one acre of land for $5.00 from Jane Barwick Jul 23, 1903.

C.P. and T.I. Smith bought 60 acres (more or less) from U.m. and E.L. Durden for $1000.00 Oct. 26, 1905. This land is adjoining land owned by C.P.Smith and Jane Barwick.

Devoe Smith was administrator for Ceniann Smith's estate. Inventory includes half interest in 60 acres (more or less). This land is adjoining land owned by Thomas I. and Ceniann Smith. (This is probably 1/2 interest in 60 acres owned jointly by Ceniann and Jane Barwick.)

Ceniann died in 1917 and is buried at Kea's Church Cemetary.
