Colby Smith And Rebecca Henry |
1. C OLBY2
SMITH
(THOMAS1)
was born Abt. 1751 in VA, and died 1835 in Washington Co., GA. He married REBECCA
ANNA
HENRY
1775 in Chatham Co., NC. She was born Abt. 1753, and died Aft. 1820 in
Washington Co, GA.
Notes for C OLBY
SMITH:
Most of the information we have for Colby Smith is tradition. Tradition says
his parents were Thomas Smith from VA and Sarah Anita Colby of MA. There are
several DAR members who trace their lineage to Colby Smith of the Virginia
Militia. No record has been found of Revolution War service but he did draw land
for his service in NC and in the 1832 land lottery in GA.
We first find Colby Smith in Chatham Co, NC where he was granted 200 acres on
the great branch of Bear Creek.

We find him next listed on the 1790 census in Chatham Co, NC having 1 male
over 16, 2 males under 16, and 5 females.
Tradition says Colby Smith left Chatham Co, NC about 1798 and moved to Burke
Co, GA. He soon moved to Washington Co, GA where he lived out his life.
The 1790, 1800, and 1810 census records for Georgia are missing - destroyed
in a fire in Washington, D.C. during the War of 1812. Colby is listed on the
1820 census for Washington Co, GA. He is listed as Colesby Smith and has (2)
males 10/16, and (1) over 45. Females 16/26 and over 45.
Colby is listed on the 1825 Tax list for Washington Co, GA. He is buried in
Young Family Cemetery with no dates. His death is estimated at about 1835.
During the late 1920s or early 1930s a DAR marker was place on his tombstone.
No record has been found for his parents and some of the children listed for
him are based on speculation.
Notes for R EBECCA
ANNA
HENRY:
Rebecca Anna Henry's father may be Micajah Henry of Chatham Co, NC. This is
speculation and has not been proven.
Children of C OLBY
SMITH
and REBECCA
HENRY
are:

Notes for L UCY
SMITH:
That Lucy is the daughter of Colby Smith is tradition and word of mouth.
That she married George Weathers is family tradition. No real information
has been found for her. The following are research notes with no real
connection yet.

b. Abt. 1780.
Notes for T HOMAS
B.
SMITH:
The only records for Thomas that has been found Is the 1825 Tax list for
Washington Co, GA which shows him owning 400 acres of pine land. Also, the
1820 census record for Washington Co, GA which lists: Males: (1) 26/45, (3)
under 10, and (3) 10/16. Females: (1) 26/45, (1) 10/16, (1) 16/26.
The Bethany Baptist Church minutes for 1820-1830 mentions Thomas Smith
and Lucretia Smith. The authors of "Colby Smith and His Descendants"
speculate that Lettie may be short for Lucretia. They also speculate that
John Smith, Jr. may be the son of Thomas because of the similarity of names.
John Smith, Jr. was born abt. 1810 and married Clarky b. abt 1811.

Notes for J OHN

John was a farmer. He may have had another wife before he married Catherine
but no records or legends survive. The speculation that he had another wife is
because he was over 40 years old when his first child was born and he was much
older than Catherine.

When Nancy's cousin Mahala Young Brantley became ill, Nancy went to live

DUTY
Abt. 1812 in Washington Co, GA, daughter of RICHARD
DUTY
and ELIZABETH
THOMAS.
She was born 1795 in NC, and died Aft. 1870 in Washington Co, GA.
Notes for MICAJAH
SMITH:
Micajah Smith was born in 1790 in Chatham Co, NC (1860 Census) to Colesby and
Anna Smith. He was a twin to Rebecca who married William Young. Tradition says
that the Smith family moved from NC about 1800 to Burke Co, Ga and then on the
Washington Co, GA. The 1790, 1800, and 1810 Census records for Georgia were lost
during an attack on Washington D. C. in the war of 1812. The first census record
for Micajah is 1820 in Washington Co, GA. He is listed there through 1870 except
for 1850.
He is listed on the Washington Co, GA. Tax List.

Elizabeth Duty was born in 1795 in NC (1860 Census record). She was the
daughter of Richard and Elizabeth Duty of Granville Co, NC. She married Micajah
Smith about 1812. Elizabeth died after the census was taken in 1870 as she is
listed with Mycager Smith in Washington Co, Ga.
It is uncertain who Elizabeth's parents were. Much more research needs to be
done.

Notes for JOSEPH
DUTY
SMITH:
Census records show that Joseph was born and lived all his life in
Washington County, GA.
Joseph D. Smith was born in 1813 in Washington Co, Ga. He married Rebecca
Elmira Joiner in 1835. Elmira died in 1864 and he married Sophie (Whidden)
Smith, widow of Daniel C. Smith. To the marriage she brought her two
daughters, Mary E. and Emma T. Sophie and Joseph had one son, Ednar Columbus
born in 1866.
Some believe that Joseph married a third time to "Mary". In 1880 he was
still living with Sohpie and since he is 67 yrs. old in 1880 and he died in
1887 I think it is unlikely that he married again.
Notes for REBECCA
ELMIRA
JOINER:
All census records show Elmira Joiner Smith living in Washington Co, GA.
Rebecca Elmira Joiner was born in Washington county, GA in 1815. She
married in 1835 at the age of 20 yrs old. She died in 1864 after living her

(COLBY2,

was born Abt. 1798 in GA, and died Abt. 1854 in Washington Co, GA. He married
LAVINA
PHILLIPS
Abt. 1820 in Washington Co, GA, daughter of JANE
SMITH
PHILIPS
KINMAN
KILLINGSWORTH.
She was born Abt. 1805 in GA, and died Abt. 1862 in Washington Co, GA.
Notes for GEORGE
SMITH:
George Smith was born in Georgia - probably Burke County. Although the rest
of Colby's children were born in North Carolina, all the census records for
George's children say their father was born in Georgia. The 1850 census record
for Washington County, Georgia lists him as being born in Georgia and he is 54
years old. That would mean he was born in 1796. Colby moved his family to Burke
County about 1798 which means that George may have been born in North Carolina.
But ages were often wrong on census records and George may have been younger.
1850 Washington Co, GA. George 54, Viny 43, Elijah 41, Sarah Ann J. 16, Colby
18, George F. 14, Elizabeth 12, Martha A. P. 10, Daniel J. 7, Nancy M. 5, Vina
3, Eli 29. All were born in Georgia. George, Elijah, Colby, and Eli were listed
as planters. If this Elijah is the son of George and Viny his age is mis-stated.
He should be age 21.
George was listed on the 1825 tax list for Washington County, GA. He paid a
poll tax but did not have property. On the 1828 tax list he paid tax on 400
acres of pine land. In 1851 he received a Headright and Bounty land grant of 600
acres in Washington County.
George was a member of Liberty Grove Baptist Church but moved to New Bethel
Church in 1848.
George died about 1854 but no record or burial site have been located.
Notes for LAVINA
PHILLIPS:
According to family legends Lavinia was a Philips but some believe she was a
Kinman. Her mother first married John Philips and later married Kendrick Kinman.
Records for her mother indicate that all her children were fathered by Kendrick
Kinman. In Her mother's will dated 1857 she lists Lavinia as the widow of George
Smith.
