John was born in Green Co, GA and grew up in Putnam Co.  He also lived in Troup Co, GA before moving to Chambers Co, AL.

1860 Census - slave schedule shows John Smedley owns 6 slaves. Looks like one family.

In 1870 John's daughter Olive and her husband Sherrod Dukes are living with him in Chambers Co, AL. He is age 80.

In 1880 John Smedley is in Chambers Co, AL - age 91 and married to Effie age 50. Also living with him is Kelis? male age 45. For Kelis the race is blacked out. He may be a servant.

Middleton and Mary lare iving with his father in 1860.   He is 30 and she is 25.

Middleton Milledge (M.M.) Smedley, from Hickory Flats in Chambers County, AL, enlisted as a private in Company A, 38th Alabama Infantry, CSA, during the Civil War. He was taken prisoner at Missionary Ridge, TN. He was held at the Military Prison in Louisville, KY. On December 7, 1863, he was taken to Rock Island Barracks, IL. On March 12, 1865, he was received at Wayside Hospital in Richmond, VA.

Family tradition has it that he returned home from the war, but that he died soon after from injuries received.

In 1930 Richard's wife Agnes is living with their son, Grady. In 1932 Richard is living in Flintville, TN with Bunch Conn. His grandson, Hoyt N. Frasier, wrote a letter  to his Grandma Stone and mentioned that he was helping his grandpa farm. He also said Grandma (Bunch Conn) was running a cafe.
