Micajah Smith And Elizabeth Duty

1.
M
ICAJAH3 SMITH (COLBY2, THOMAS1) was born Jul 18, 1790 in Chatham Co., NC, and died Sep 24, 1878 in Washington Co., GA. He married ELIZABETH DUTY Abt. 1812 in Washington Co, GA, daughter of RICHARD DUTY and ELIZABETH THOMAS. She was born 1795 in NC, and died Aft. 1870 in Washington Co, GA.

Notes for MICAJAH SMITH:

Micajah Smith was born in 1790 in Chatham Co, NC (1860 Census) to Colesby and Anna Smith. He was a twin to Rebecca who married William Young. Tradition says that the Smith family moved from NC about 1800 to Burke Co, Ga and then on the Washington Co, GA. The 1790, 1800, and 1810 Census records for Georgia were lost during an attack on Washington D. C. in the war of 1812. The first census record for Micajah is 1820 in Washington Co, GA. He is listed there through 1870 except for 1850.

Micajah married Elizabeth Duty ( also born in NC) about 1812. Her parents have not been verified.

1860 Census - Washington Co, GA - Sandersville Micajah 70, Elizabeth 65, David J. 27, Martha 24, Isaac Chester 22.

1870 Census - Washington Co, Ga - Peacocks Mycager 80, Elizabeth 74, Dorothy Saulter 21.

Notes for ELIZABETH DUTY:

Elizabeth Duty was born in 1795 in NC (1860 Census record). She was the daughter of Richard and Elizabeth Duty of Granville Co, NC. She married Micajah Smith about 1812. Elizabeth died after the census was taken in 1870 as she is listed with Mycager Smith in Washington Co, Ga.

Elizabeth's parents have not been verified.  Colby Smith and His Descendants list her father as William Duty.  Another source lists her parents as Joseph Duty and Elizabeth Brantley.  Much more research needs to be done in regard to Elizabeth's parents.

Notes for JOSEPH DUTY SMITH:

Census records show that Joseph was born and lived all his life in Washington County, GA.

Joseph D. Smith was born in 1813 in Washington Co, Ga. He married Rebecca Elmira Joiner in 1835. Elmira died in 1864 and he married Sophie (Whidden) Smith, widow of Daniel C. Smith. To the marriage she brought her two daughters, Mary E. and Emma T. Sophie and Joseph had one son, Ednar Columbus born in 1866.

Some believe that Joseph married a third time to "Mary". In 1880 he was still living with Sohpie and since he is 67 yrs. old in 1880 and he died in 1887 I think it is unlikely that he married again.

Notes for REBECCA ELMIRA JOINER:

Rebecca Elmira Joiner was born in Washington county, GA in 1815. She married in 1835 at the age of 20 yrs old. She died in 1864 after living her entire life in Washington Co, Ga.

Notes for THOMAS IVY SMITH:

Thomas Ivey Smith was born April 20, 1860 in Washington County, Georgia. He lived there until after his marriage to Ceniann Permelia Boatwright and then moved to Emanuel County. He farmed in Emanuel County until his death. He is listed on the 1930 Census living with his son, Devoe, in Highlands County Florida. He then returned to Emanuel County, Ga. where he died in November of that year.

Ceniann died in 1917 and it is believed that he married again in 1919 but no record has been found. He did not have a wife on the 1920 census record.

C.P. and T.I. Smith bought 60 acres (more or less) from U.m. and E.L. Durden for $1000.00 Oct. 26, 1905. This land is adjoining land owned by C.P.Smith and Jane Barwick.

Notes for CENIANN PERMELIA BOATWRIGHT:

Ceniann bought one acre of land for $5.00 from Jane Barwick Jul 23, 1903.

C.P. and T.I. Smith bought 60 acres (more or less) from U.m. and E.L. Durden for $1000.00 Oct. 26, 1905. This land is adjoining land owned by C.P.Smith and Jane Barwick.

Devoe Smith was administrator for Ceniann Smith's estate. Inventory includes half interest in 60 acres (more or less). This land is adjoining land owned by Thomas I. and Ceniann Smith. (This is probably 1/2 interest in 60 acres owned jointly by Ceniann and Jane Barwick.)

Ceniann Permelia Boatwright was born in Washington county, Ga. By the 1860 Census the family had moved to Laurens county where she is listed as 4 yrs. old. On the 1870 census she is listed as Susan A., 14 yrs. old. The age is right and there was no Susan listed on 1860 census. The census taker probably heard Susan Ann instead of Ceniann.

Her father died in the Civil War and her mother died in 1880. In 1880 she married Thomas Ivey Smith. On the 1900 and 1910 census she is listed with her husband and children in Emanuel county, Ga., Adrian.

Ceniann died in 1917 and is buried at Kea's Church Cemetary.

Child of JOSEPH SMITH and SOPHIE WHIDDEN is:

Notes for CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS SMITH:

"Colby Smith and His Descendants" has his name as Columbus in one place and Christopher Columbus in another place. On the 1900 census he is Calvin C. and on the 1870 census with David and Cynthia E. Smith he is Christopher C. On the1880 census with David and Jane Smith he is Charles. There's definately a problem with this family.

Columbus' children originally from "Colby Smith and His Descendants". The 1900 census record shows these children to be the children of Calvin C. and Mattie.

1900 Laurens Co, GA. Calvin C. 32, Mattie 40, Children: Lula 19, Dessie 12, Imogene 10, Mercie 7. Mattie and Calvin have been married 12 years. She has had 5 children with 4 living.

Lula should be Lula Starling, daughter of Martha and Simon Starling. Martha Starling should be widow in 1880 - have not been able to find her.

Notes for MARTHA EUGENIA L. BRANTLEY:

Name is Virginia on the 1870 census.

1900 Laurens Co, GA. Calvin C. 32, Mattie 40, Children: Lula 19, Dessie 12, Imogene 10, Mercie 7. Mattie and Calvin have been married 12 years. She has had 5 children with 4 living.
