Notes for THOMAS SMEDLEY:
1850 Troup Co, GA. Thomas Smedley, Sr. 82, Thomas M. 55, Naomi 45, Mary A. 16, Olivia 8. I don't know who Mary A. and Olivia are. Olivia is listed as female, otherwise it could be Naomi's son Oliver who is 20 in 1860. If this is not him, where is he? Naomi and Thomas M. are both children of Thomas. Thomas M. never married.
1850 Troup Co, GA - Slave Schedule shows Thomas owns 23 slaves.
Thomas moved his family to Troup County, GA by 1837. Most of his children moved on to Chambers Co and Randolph Co, Al. In Oct 1838 Thomas hired a man to build a house and a thread mill on the "Chattahoochee River near Grier's Ferry?. Later on, the man took Thomas to court claiming that Thomas had not paid him. The court ruled in favor of Thomas Smedley. One family record states that this mill was the first cotton thread mill in the South.
